This research studies surrealist elements in Reza Baraheni’s poetry, especially in the collection Address to Butterflies and Why I Am No Longer a Nimai Poet, in which he formulated the theory of linguistics. The researchers Using a descriptive-analytical method based on the poet’s poems and answering the question of whether the linguistic and visual ruptures of Baraheni’s poetry are the result of surrealist poetics or merely a reflection of his own theory of “linguistics,” and attempt to extract six operational components of surrealism from his poems: the unconscious’s domination over reason, automatic writing, incongruous coexistence, the highest point, madness, and the miraculous, and match each with specific linguistic signs with Baraheni’s poetic evidence. The findings show that Baraheni, when faced with inexpressible experiences such as death, used these techniques convincingly to achieve the original surrealist function; elsewhere in the poems, these same techniques served the conscious process of his linguistics. Therefore, the application of surrealist elements in his poetry is not absolute but heterogeneous and selective, and he reinterprets surrealism in service of his linguistic project.
